2016 Open Enrollment Deadlines You Need To Know

2016 Open EnrollmentDon’t miss your opportunity; make these 2016 open enrollment deadlines on your calendar!

Open enrollment is coming up!

Not sure what that means? Under the Affordable Care Act, all Americans who aren’t insured through their workplace legally have to buy their own health insurance coverage. Otherwise, they’ll face tax penalties. Their only opportunity to do that comes during each year’s open enrollment period. Open enrollment 2016 is just around the corner!

Put these open enrollment deadlines on your calendar to make sure you don’t miss your chance to get the health coverage you need to protect your body and comply with the law.

  • November 1st, 2015: This is the first official day of open enrollment. Once November begins, you’ll have the chance to buy your 2016 health insurance plan through your state Marketplace. In Colorado, our Marketplace is known as Connect for Health Colorado.
  • December 15th, 2015: This is your last day to buy a policy that will take effect at the start of the new year. You want your coverage to start on January 1st if you want to avoid penalties when filing your 2016 taxes.
  • January 31st, 2016: Open enrollment comes to a close. If you didn’t buy a policy during this time, you’ll need to qualify for a special enrollment period or you won’t be able to enroll in a 2016 health insurance plan. You can buy short term insurance, but this doesn’t exempt you from tax penalties.

The beginning of the next open enrollment period will be here before you know it! Are you ready to get the right health insurance during this upcoming window of opportunity?
