March is Workplace Eye Health and Safety Month. Take a look!

According to statistics released by Prevent Blindness America (PBA), some 2,000 American workers suffer an eye injury at work every day. Nearly 1 million Americans have lost some of their sight due to an eye injury on the job.  The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that this has caused $300 million in lost time, medical expenses, and workers’ comp.  Many of these mishaps and injuries are preventable and that’s why PBA has designated March as Workplace Eye Health and Safety Month.  They hope to reduce this number by bringing awareness to this issue.

Here are some safety tips to help us work together to bring down these numbers.

Safety Eyewear

Proper safety glasses are a highly effective way to reduce eye injury. PBA estimates that 90% of eye injuries could be prevented if proper safety eyewear was being worn. 3 out of 5 people that are injured report that they were wearing no protection at all.

Check to see what kind of safety eyewear is recommended by the line of work you are in and what specific tasks your staff are completing. Are you working with hazardous chemicals that could splatter? Are there flying objects or tools that could possibly be in the area, like in a construction zone?

Infection

If you work in a health related field, you might be at risk for infection. Encourage your employees to wear safety eyewear to lessen their exposure to infection and illness.

Computers

Your staff may be susceptible to eye problems caused by looking at a computer screen too much. These problems can cause headaches, eye fatigue, and blurred vision. A quick fix for this syndrome is to take frequent breaks by looking away from the screen.

Also, make sure your team is getting regular eye exams to catch any problems before they become major ones.
