Heart Health Tips For American Heart Month

Heart Health Tips For American Heart MonthCelebrate February With These Guidelines For Healthy Living

When you think of February, what comes to mind? You likely conjure up visions of palettes of red and pink, scattered with a multitude of cupids and heart-shaped candies. In case your mind jumps immediately to Valentine’s Day, do not forget that February also marks American Heart Month.

The next time you pick up a heart-shaped card or box of chocolates, remember that the shape is a celebration of one of your body’s most important organs. Since cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death among men and women in the United States, it is important to spend some time thinking about how we can practice more heart healthy habits. Here are a few things you can do to celebrate this important month.

  • Eat a more balanced, healthful diet. Make sure you are getting your daily servings of fruit and vegetables, and avoid processed foods.
  • Get moving every day. Just thirty months of walking each day can go a long way towards improving your cardiovascular health.
  • Have your blood pressure and cholesterol checked. Your general healthcare provider will be able to check them, or you can get these readings by donating blood if you are feeling more philanthropic.
  • Limit your vices. Quit smoking, or if you have not started make sure you do not. Moderate your drinking. Men are advised not to exceed two alcoholic drinks a day, and women are advised to stick to just one.
