Brush Up on Your Sleep Basics During Sleep Awareness Week

Sleep Awareness Week

Are you getting the sleep you need? Find out during Sleep Awareness Week.

March 6th marks the beginning of Sleep Awareness Week.  The National Sleep Foundation has put on this event in order to raise awareness about just how important good sleep is to your body and mind.

With good sleep, it’s not all about quantity; quality is a big factor. You can achieve better quality sleep by looking at your daily routine, sleep schedule, bedtime habits, and lifestyle choices for clues as to how to get better sleep.

Tip 1

Get in sync with your natural circadian rhythm. Your circadian rhythm is the pattern of rest that your body wants to have. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day for starters. This will regulate your rhythm and your body will adjust if it knows what to expect.

Also, try to resist sleeping in and taking naps. This can mess with your sleep cycle. If you have had some sleep deprivation, these things can help you catch up but although it’s a good quick fix, don’t make it a habit!

Tip 2

Avoid bright unnatural light. When you are in a dimly lit room at night, it causes the release of melatonin in your brain, which is a chemical our brain secretes to make us ready for bed. By the same logic, bright sunlight in the morning will help you wake up.

Tip 3

Take control of your brain. If you find yourself restless, worried, angry, or anxious at night, be aware that these are feelings being caused by thoughts. Remember, you are in control of your mind, not the other way around. Breathing and meditation techniques can help, but the most important thing is to know that all of your problems can be solved better after a good night of rest. You will not be at full mental capacity unless you rest your mind for the night. You can do it; be strong!
