It’s Children’s Dental Health Month!

Children's Dental Health MonthKeeping up with your kids’ dental hygiene will keep their teeth looking their best.

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, which is the best time to start teaching your children about the importance of dental hygiene. While it may not seem that important, building on a strong foundation of dental hygiene can help your kids avoid any serious dental issues later in life.

Even though it is completely preventable, tooth decay is the most common chronic disease that strikes children. Luckily, there are many effective and safe preventive measures that you can take with your kids to help protect their teeth. Following good oral hygiene practices, such as brushing daily with a fluoride toothpaste, can help keep your children from getting cavities.

There are many steps that you can take to help your children avoid a cavity and keep their pearly whites looking their best, including:

  • Use fluoride – fluoride helps to prevent mineral loss in tooth enamel while helping to replace minerals that are lost. It also helps to reduce bacteria’s ability to make acid, which eats away at teeth.
  • Practice good brushing habits – both you and your child should be brushing your teeth twice a day. Use a soft bristled brush and limit the amount of toothpaste that goes on your child’s toothbrush.
  • Watch your child’s diet – saliva works to fight the acid that comes from food throughout the day. If your child eats too much starchy or sugary food, their saliva will not be able to do its job.
  • Visit your dentist – your dentist will be able to do things that you can’t take care of on your own, such as check for tooth decay and remove dental plaque. Visiting your dentist every 6 months will help you and your kids stay up with your dental health.
