Quit Smoking Now!

It’s time to finally kick the habit. Use these tips to quit smoking.

It’s time to quit smoking, and quit for good! Research shows that these are effective ways to reduce your chances of a relapse. Using these methods together gives you the best shot at finally kicking the habit.

Be Prepared

Set a date that you will quit and mark it on your calendar.

  • Write a detailed review of other times that you have tried to quit and possible reasons it was unsuccessful.
  • Get rid of all of your cigarettes and ashtrays, and don’t let anyone smoke in your home.
  • Create a zero tolerance policy: not even one puff!

Find Help

  • Create a network of people that you can call for support when the urges come. The more serious you take this, the better your chances of success.
  • Counseling doubles your chances of success.

Change Your Behaviors

  • When you get the urge to smoke, do something else. Go for a walk, workout, call a friend, pet the dog, etc.
  • Take on stress-relieving behaviors like deep breathing, exercise, and yoga.
  • Plan something enjoyable to do every day just for yourself.

Medication Can Help. Here are some medications that have been proven to help with the cessation of smoking:

  • Bupropion SR—Available by prescription
  • Nicotine gum—Available over-the-counter
  • Nicotine inhaler—Available by prescription
  • Nicotine nasal spray—Available by prescription
  • Nicotine patch—Available by prescription and over-the-counter
  • Nicotine lozenge—Available over-the-counter
  • Varenicline tartrate—Available by prescription

All of these medications will at least double your chances of quitting for good.

Keep Trying

  • Chances are that if you are going to relapse, it will happen in the first 3 months after quitting. Most people try several times before they actually quit. You will encounter some difficult situations, so prepare yourself and let nothing distract you from your goal.
  • Drinking alcohol will lower your chance of success
  • You may gain some weight while trying to quit. Don’t get discouraged. Remember your main goal.
  • If you have bad moods, just know that these are part of the process. Ride them out as best you can. You can do it!
